Defining a wear interaction property

You can specify the surface wear (erosion) due to various microscale mechanisms, such as abrasion and fretting.

For more information, see Contact Wear.

  1. From the main menu bar, select Interaction Property Create .
  2. In the Create Interaction Property dialog box that appears, do the following:
    1. Name the interaction property.

For more information about naming objects, see Using basic dialog box components.

    2. Select the Wear type of interaction property.
  3. Click Continue to close the Create Interaction Property dialog box.

Abaqus/CAE opens the Edit interaction property dialog box.

  4. Toggle on Friction coefficient to specify that the Archard’s wear equation depends explicitly on the friction coefficient.
  5. Toggle on Unitless wear coefficient to specify that the wear coefficient is dimensionless. Otherwise, the wear coefficient has dimensions of inverse of stress.
  6. If Unitless wear coefficient is on, specify the Reference stress value equal to the magnitude of hardness of the material forming the wear surface.
  7. To define a wear property that depends on surface temperature, toggle on Use surface temperature dependent data.
Surface Temperature variable columns appear in the data table.
  8. To define a wear property that depends on wear distance, toggle on Use surface wear distance dependent data.
Surface Wear Distance variable columns appear in the data table.
  9. To define a wear property that depends on contact pressure, toggle on Use contact pressure dependent data.
Contact Pressure variable columns appear in the data table.
  10. To define a wear property that depends on field variables, click the arrows to the right of the Number of field variables field to increase or decrease the number of field variables.
Field variable columns appear in the data table.
  11. In the data table, enter the appropriate data.

You can enter data into the table using the keyboard. Alternatively, you can click mouse button 3 anywhere in the table to view a list of options for specifying tabular data.

For detailed information on each option, see Entering tabular data.

  12. Click OK to create the wear interaction property and to exit the editor.
