Repairing short edges

Use the Repair short edges tool from the Sketcher toolbox to remove selected short edges from your sketch. Abaqus/CAE provides two methods for edge removal: you can either remove every edge that you select, or you can select multiple edges as candidates for removal and specify a length tolerance value. Edges shorter than the tolerance length are removed from the sketch.

Context:

If you remove short edges by specifying length tolerance values, you should perform the removals using an iterative process. Start by selecting the edges that you want to remove and use the default length tolerance value of 0.001 for your first attempt. If the short edges are not removed, reselect them and increase the tolerance. Repeat this process until the short edges are removed from the sketch.

You should repair the short edges in your sketch only after removing its gaps and overlaps. For more information, see Removing gaps and overlaps.

  1. From the modify tools in the Sketcher toolbox, select the Repair short edges tool . For a diagram of the tools in the Sketcher toolbox, see The Sketcher tools.

Abaqus/CAE displays prompts in the prompt area to guide you through the procedure.

  2. Specify the edges that you want to remove or, if you are specifying a length tolerance value, the edges you want to consider for removal. You can ShiftClick or CtrlClick to specify edges individually, or you can drag-select to specify all of the edges within an area in your sketch.

Abaqus/CAE colors the selected edges red.

  3. If you are removing short edges without specifying a tolerance, click Done in the prompt area.

Abaqus/CAE removes the selected edges from the sketch.

  4. If you are removing edges shorter than a specified length tolerance value, toggle on Specify tolerance in the prompt area and click Done. For your first attempt, accept the default tolerance value and click Done in the prompt area.

Abaqus/CAE removes from the sketch any of the selected edges that are shorter than the length tolerance value.

  5. To continue the removal of short edges by length tolerance value, perform the following steps:
    1. Reselect the edges that you want to consider for removal, and click Done.
    2. Leave Specify tolerance toggled on, and click Done again.
    3. Increase the length tolerance value in the prompt area.
    4. Click mouse button 2 anywhere in the Abaqus/CAE window.

Abaqus/CAE removes from the sketch any of the selected edges that are shorter than the length tolerance value.

    5. Continue selecting edges and increasing the tolerance until Abaqus/CAE has removed all the short edges that you want to remove from your model.
  6. When you have finished repairing short edges in your sketch, do one of the following:

    • Click mouse button 2 anywhere in the Abaqus/CAE window.

    • Select any other tool in the Sketcher toolbox.

    • Click the cancel button in the prompt area.
