Defining solubility

Solubility, s, is used to define the “normalized concentration,” ϕ, of the diffusing phase in a mass diffusion process:

ϕ=c/s,

where c is the concentration. The normalized concentration is often also referred to as the “activity” of the diffusing material, and the gradients of the normalized concentration, along with gradients of temperature and pressure stress, drive the diffusion process. For more information, see the following sections:

  1. From the menu bar in the Edit Material dialog box, select OtherMass DiffusionSolubility.

    (For information on displaying the Edit Material dialog box, see Creating or editing a material.)

  2. Toggle on Use temperature-dependent data to define solubility as a function of temperature.

    A column labeled Temp appears in the Data table.

  3. Click the arrows to the right of the Number of field variables field to increase or decrease the number of field variables on which the solubility depends.
  4. Enter the following data in the Data table:

    Solubility

    Solubility. (Units of PLF−1/2.)

    Temp

    Temperature.

    Field n

    Predefined field variables.

    For detailed information on how to enter data, see Entering tabular data.

  5. Click OK to close the Edit Material dialog box. Alternatively, you can select another material behavior to define from the menus in the Edit Material dialog box (see Browsing and modifying material behaviors, for more information).
