What can I do with the Edit Mesh toolset?

Context:

Select Mesh Edit from the main menu to renumber selected nodes of an orphan mesh. You can renumber the selected nodes by specifying a starting node label and an increment or by offsetting the existing node label by a specified value. (For information on renumbering the nodes of an Abaqus/CAE native mesh, see Changing the labels of all nodes and elements.)

  1. Enter the Mesh module.

This tool is available only for working on parts that do not contain any geometry. You can work in the part or assembly context. However, any renumbering applied to a part instance is applied at the part level and, therefore, affects all instances of that part.

  2. From the main menu, select Mesh Edit .

Abaqus/CAE displays the Edit Mesh dialog box.

Tip: You can also display the Edit Mesh dialog box using the tool, located at the bottom of the Mesh module toolbox.

  3. In the dialog box, do the following:
    1. In the Category field, select Node.
    2. From the Method list, select Renumber.

Abaqus/CAE displays the Node Renumbering dialog box. If a single mesh part is displayed in the viewport, the Part Label Range displays the range of node labels for the entire part.

  4. Do either of the following to specify the renumbering method:

    • Choose By Start Label, and enter the value of the first node label and the increment that will be used to number subsequent nodes.

    • Choose By Offset, and enter the value by which the existing node labels will be offset.

  5. Use one of the following methods to select the nodes that you want to renumber:

Selecting all nodes of a part
    • Select All (in the part context) or Part (in the assembly context) to renumber all the orphan mesh nodes of a part. If there is more than one mesh part instance in the viewport, click the button to select a part instance.

Selecting nodes using the unordered method
    1. Select Specify and Unordered to select the nodes in any sequence.

    2. Click Select to select the nodes to renumber.

    3. From the prompt area, choose the selection method and select the nodes to renumber. For more information, see Selecting the nodes to edit.

Selecting nodes using the directed path method
    1. Select Specify and Directed Path to renumber the nodes along a feature edge from a selected start node to a selected end node.

    2. Click Select to select the nodes to renumber.

    3. Select the start node. Abaqus/CAE displays all the nodes along the feature edge. If desired, modify the angle to redefine how Abaqus/CAE defines a feature edge.

    4. Select Done from the prompt area. The start node is displayed in purple.

    5. Select the end node. The start and end nodes must lie on the same feature edge.

Selecting nodes using the sequence method
    1. Select Specify and Sequence to renumber the nodes based on the sequence in which you select the nodes.

    2. Click Select to select the nodes to renumber.

    3. Select the start node and each additional node in sequence.

    4. When you have finished selecting nodes, click mouse button 2.

The Part Label Range displays the range of node labels for the renumbered nodes.

  6. Click OK or Apply to renumber the nodes. If you click Apply, Abaqus/CAE renumbers the nodes; however, the nodes remain selected, and you can continue renumbering them.
  7. Repeat the previous steps as often as required to renumber additional nodes.
  8. When you have finished renumbering nodes, click Cancel to close the Node Renumbering dialog box.
