Importing a substructure into a model database as a part

Select File Import Part from the main menu bar to import a substructure definition in a .sim file in the form of a new part definition. The .sim file you import must reside in the same directory as the supporting Abaqus files to which the SIM database refers; these supporting files might include data in the formats .prt, .mdl, or .stt. In addition, the release of the .sim file you import must be consistent with the release of Abaqus/CAE that you are using.

Context:

Substructure import also requires an output database (.odb) file for mesh display.

  1. From the main menu bar, select FileImportPart.

The Import Part dialog box appears.

  2. From the File Filter menu at the bottom of the Import Part dialog box, select Substructure (*.sim*).

Abaqus/CAE lists all the files in the selected directory with a .sim* file extension.

  3. Select the SIM database containing the substructure to import, and click OK.

The Create Substructure Part dialog box appears, displaying the substructure's name and its unique identifier (which begins with the letter Z).

  4. If desired, customize the Part name for the substructure you are importing.
  5. In the Use mesh from ODB file field, specify the name of the output database file containing the mesh that you want to associate with this substructure definition.
  6. Click OK.

Abaqus/CAE imports the substructure into your model as a new part definition.
