Configuring the Design Variables

When you use the Improve Design mode, you can select the parameters that you want to use as design variables in your design problem.

  1. Double-click the SDI component icon .
    The SDI Component Editor appears.
  2. From the SDI Component Editor, click the Design Variables tab.
  3. Right-click in the table to access various options for working with design variables.

For more information, see Setting Table Options.

  4. Determine which parameters you want to use as design variables by selecting the corresponding check boxes in the first column.

Alternatively, you can click the button at the bottom of the tab to add all the parameters. To clear all the parameters, click the button.

  5. Specify the Lower Bound and Upper Bound in the corresponding columns.

SDI requires both lower and upper bounds for each design variable. The sample ranges at each step for SDI are determined by the design variable’s range, the number of steps, and the current value. The design variable bounds first used are the problem formulation bounds defined for the selected parameter on the Design Gateway Formulation tab. If no problem formulation bounds are defined, the bounds are ±10% of the current parameter value if the current parameter value is nonzero. If there are no problem formulation bounds and the current parameter value is 0, the bounds are 0.0 and 1.0. For more information about problem formulation, see Using Problem Formulations in the Isight User’s Guide.

You can map the lower and upper bound variable attributes to parameters. For more information, see Mapping Options and Attributes to Parameters.

  6. Change the initial value in the Value column.
  7. If desired, click Edit at the bottom of the editor to set variable options.

For more information, see Editing Attributes for Multiple Parameters.

  8. If desired, click OK to save your changes and to close the SDI Component Editor.
