About the Shaft Example

This example demonstrates how to achieve rotational symmetric optimization results in a shape optimization.

This task shows you how to:

About the Model

The initial model is illustrated in the following figure. It mimics a bent pipe with different-sized openings at each side. Two distributed loads in negative y-direction and z-direction, respectively, are applied on the right bent opening and the bottom is clamped.

The design nodes are located in the blue colored area at the tapering. The pipe does not lose its iconic form and, thus, the design nodes stays rotational symmetric. This can be achieved by applying the SURF_TURN manufacturing constraint.

Procedure Summary

Model: shaft_surfturn_sens.ext
Design Area: Nodes at the tapering (blue area)
Objective: Minimize the Maximum of DISP_X_ABS and DISP_Z_ABS in nodes 13 and 440
Constraint: Maximum volume: 100% and Rotational symmetry
