Modifying Sketcher objects by splitting edges

Use the split tool from the Sketcher toolbox to split an individual edge of a Sketcher object into multiple edges. You can split an edge at any intersection between the edge and other sketch, reference, or construction geometry. If you use other sketch geometry to split an edge, Abaqus/CAE splits both edges at the intersection point. You can also split an edge at an extended intersection—an intersection that would exist only if another edge in the sketch was extended.

  1. From the modify tools in the Sketcher toolbox, select the split tool . For a diagram of the tools in the Sketcher toolbox, see The Sketcher tools.

    Abaqus/CAE displays prompts in the prompt area to guide you through the procedure.

  2. Select the edge that you want to split; you can select any sketched or imported edge in Abaqus/CAE.

    Note:

    If you split a spline curve, Abaqus/CAE removes the control points to retain the exact shape of the original curve; therefore, you can no longer edit the shape of the curve.

  3. Move the cursor over other edges in the sketch.

    As you move the cursor, Abaqus/CAE highlights the edge that would be selected at the current cursor location. Abaqus/CAE also circles the split point—the intersection point between the edge to be broken and the edge at the cursor position. If there is more than one possible split point between the selected edges, Abaqus/CAE circles the point that is closest to the cursor position.

  4. Click to accept the indicated split point.

    Abaqus/CAE splits the first edge, creating two edges that share the split point as one endpoint. Abaqus/CAE also splits the second edge if it is sketch geometry and the split point lies between its endpoints.

    Note:

    If you split a circle or an ellipse, Abaqus/CAE uses the vertex on the edge as a second split point to create two arcs. If the split point indicated in the previous step is the same as the edge point, a warning appears in the message area and the curve is not broken.

  5. To split more edges, repeat the above steps beginning with Step 2.
  6. When you have finished splitting edges, do one of the following

    • Click mouse button 2 anywhere in the Abaqus/CAE window.

    • Select any tool in the Sketcher toolbox.

    • Click the cancel button in the prompt area.
