About Preprocessing FE Models for Optimization

Preprocessing of a finite element analysis might be performed in various preprocessing systems. To be able to use Tosca Structure in a familiar environment, Tosca Structure offers several preprocessing interfaces.

The finite element model might be generated in every finite element preprocessor that can generate an input model for the supported finite element solvers. Simplifications for the formulation of the optimization task (such as groups, different properties, ...) might also be defined in many FE preprocessing systems that are not mentioned below (for example, Hypermesh). The optimization preprocessing of Tosca Structure is mainly based on group information. Group definition can be made by graphical selection of nodes and elements or already in the FE-preprocessor. Using Tosca Structure.gui, all necessary information such as design nodes or frozen elements should be defined as groups in the FE-preprocessor. These groups might be read by Tosca Structure.pre and then be referenced in the further definitions of the parameter file.
