Creating a Bottom-Up Data Exchange

You create a bottom-up data exchange when no parameters exist, and the parameters will be created as the data exchange program is created. The data type and default value of the parameter (and the size of an array parameter) are determined by examining the data that were selected.

Note: A file opened as read-only supports only read action, not write action. Alternatively, a file opened for writing supports both read and write actions.

  1. Double-click the Data Exchanger component icon .
    The Data Exchanger Component Editor appears.
  2. From the Data Exchanger Component Editor, select some data in the Data Source.

  3. Adjust the swipe details, as desired.

  4. In the Parameter list, enter the name of the parameter.

    The parameter list changes to a yellow background to indicate that this is the name of a new parameter. For more information about working with parameters, see Parameters in a Bottom-Up Data Exchange.

    Tip: Typically, you click in the Parameter list before typing the parameter name. Instead, after clicking in the Data Source area, press Tab to move to the Parameter list. However, pressing Tab is optional—if you start typing after clicking or swiping in the Data Source area, the mouse cursor moves to the Parameter list.

  5. Apply the new read or write action by doing one of the following:

    • Click the Read or Write button adjacent to the Parameter list.

    • After typing a new name in the Parameter list, press Enter. This option uses the default read/write action for the exchanger.

    The parameter is created and selected, the read or write is created, the action is executed, and the data are highlighted.

  6. Change the parameter settings, as desired:
    1. Click in the Name, Value, Mode, or Type column to begin editing.
    2. Click in the Op column of the Parameter table, or click Read next to the parameter name to change the action from write to read.
    3. Right-click on the parameter and select Edit Selected to change the size of an array parameter (or to make any other change to any parameter).
  7. Return to Step 1 to define more data source information.
  8. Click OK to save your changes and to close the Data Exchanger Component Editor.
